History

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia, Inc. has been serving the youth of our area for fifty years.

It was May of 1953 that Big Brothers first opened its doors under the direction of Leonard Mitz. In 1963, the Board of Directors hired Clyde Chatman, who later became the federation's longest serving Executive Director. He faithfully served the community for thirty-four years.

In 1977, Big Brothers expanded to include women volunteers and thus became Big Brothers Big Sisters. During the past five decades hundreds of young boys and girls have benefited from volunteers in the community. Many of our matches last well beyond the one-year commitment and often result in life-long friendships.
